What is the UEMS Division of Metabolic-Bariatric Surgery?

The UEMS Division of Metabolic-Bariatric Surgery is part of the UEMS Section of Surgery and works closely with the European Chapter of the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity (IFSO-EC). It provides guidance on training and professional practice in metabolic and bariatric surgery across Europe, aiming to enhance education in obesity surgery and improve patient care.

What are the main objectives?

The division’s primary goal is to promote and maintain the highest standards in metabolic-bariatric surgery through high-quality education, training, and accreditation, not just in Europe but globally. To achieve this, the division has developed a Curriculum and a Syllabus.

Candidates’ knowledge and skills are assessed through the European Board of Surgery Qualification (EBSQ) examination in metabolic-bariatric surgery, organized by the UEMS Division. Successful candidates earn the title Fellow of the European Board of Surgery (FEBS) in Metabolic-Bariatric Surgery.
