Within the EU, UEMS is organized to handle and harmonise specialisation. UEMS consists of a number of Sections for all specialities. One of these is the Section of Surgery which has a number of Divisions for various parts of general surgery.
The Division of Endocrine surgery (DES) was formed in 1999 and now handles the definition of endocrine surgery.
The DES is run by an executive and national representatives from all European countries.
The DES has defined the curriculum for Endocrine Surgery (thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal and GEP-NET surgery) and handles the accreditation in Endocrine Surgery. Since 2003, examinations in Endocrine Surgery (thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal and GEP-NET surgery) have been arranged. Since 2008, a curriculum for Neck Endocrine Surgery only (thyroid and parathyroid surgery) exists too.
Since 2023, even examinations for neck endocrine (thyroid and parathyroid) and adrenal surgery are offered.
